INTRODUCTION: Interleukin (IL)-33 and its receptor ST2L play key roles in the IL-33/ST2 signaling pathway. Soluble ST2 (sST2) inhibits the proper function of IL-33. sST2 levels are increased in patients with several neurological diseases, but in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), IL-33 and sST2 levels have not been studied. This study aimed to investigate whether serum levels of IL-33 and sST2 are useful as biomarkers of HIE severity and prognostic factors for infants with HIE. METHODS: Twenty-three infants with HIE and 16 controls (gestational age ≥36 weeks and ≥1,800 g birth weight) were enrolled in this study. Serum levels of IL-33 and sST2 were measured at <6 h, 1-2, 3, and 7 days of age. Hydrogen-1 magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed, and ratios of peak integrals of lactate/N-acetylaspartate (Lac/NAA) were calculated as objective indicators of brain damage. RESULTS: In the moderate and severe HIE, serum sST2 concentrations were increased and there was a good correlation between serum sST2 and HIE severity on days 1-2, whereas no variation was observed in serum IL-33. Serum sST2 levels were positively correlated with Lac/NAA ratios (Kendall's rank correlation coefficient = 0.527, p = 0.024), and both sST2 and Lac/NAA ratios were significantly higher in HIE infants with neurological impairment (p = 0.020 and <0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: sST2 may be a useful predictor of severity and later neurological outcomes in infants with HIE. Further investigation is required to elucidate the relationship between the IL-33/ST2 axis and HIE.

Background: Spinal cord infarction is a rare but serious complication of neurointervention that has been rarely documented. An association between spinal cord infarction and the placement of large bore catheters in the vertebral artery (VA) has been mentioned, but the precise etiology remains unclear. Case Description: A 72-year-old female presented with the right hemiparesis and left thermal hypoalgesia directly after endovascular coil embolization for an unruptured basilar tip aneurysm. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated right-sided upper cervical (C2-3) spinal cord infarction. Conventional bilateral vertebral angiograms revealed no opacification of the anterior spinal arteries. Cone-beam computed tomography showed a watershed area of radiculomedullary arteries that was correlated with the extent of the ischemic lesion. Thus, the spinal cord ischemia may have had multifactorial causes combined with reduced perfusion pressure to the spinal cord, which was caused by the placement of the guiding catheter in the VA and intensive hypotension during general anesthesia. Conclusion: Spinal cord infarction should be recognized as a serious complication of endovascular treatment involving posterior circulation.

The cDNA library prepared from Lentinula edodes, Hokken 600 (H600), primordia was screened using cDNA expressed specifically in Dictyostelium discoideum prestalk as a probe. Twenty-one clones, Le-Dd1 ~ 21, were isolated from the L. edodes primordia cDNA library. Functional analysis of each gene was carried out by transformation into protoplast cells from L. edodes Mori 252 (M252) mycelia with the overexpression vector pLG-RasF1 of each gene because M252 protoplast cells were transformed with an 11-fold higher efficiency than H600 cells. Transformants with the overexpression vector of Le-Dd10 formed a fruiting body at almost the same time as H600, a positive control, although M252, a negative control, did not form a fruiting body under culture conditions. This suggested that Le-Dd10 is involved in the formation of fruiting bodies. Single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis revealed that Le-Dd10 is located on No. 4 linkage group of L. edodes. The properties of Le-Dd10 products were investigated by Western blotting analysis using polyclonal antibodies against GST:Le-Dd10 fusion proteins. As a result, 56-kDa, 27-kDa, and 14-kDa protein bands appeared in primordial and fruiting body stages, although the expected molecular weight of the Le-Dd10 product was 50 kDa.

INTRODUCTION: To analyze the extent to which various types of orthoses can restrict motion of the lumbar spine and provide basic evidence regarding the optimal orthosis for conservative treatment of lumbar spondylolysis (LS), particularly. Although several orthoses have been developed and applied for LS with better outcomes for bony healing, basic data regarding which is optimal are still lacking. METHODS: Ten healthy voluntary participants were included in this study. Lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) was analyzed using a three-dimensional motion capture system (NEXUS 2.2, Vicon Motion Systems Ltd., UK) under five conditions wearing no orthosis (NB) and four types of lumbar-sacral orthoses (LSO): custom-made hard LSO (HO), soft LSO supported by four aluminum stays and a custom-molded back cast-panel named "Return to Sports" braces (RS), custom-made soft LSO known as Damen type elasticity corset (DC), and off-the-shelf soft LSO. RESULTS: HO showed the highest restriction of motion in all directions than the others. Especially, ROM of rotation and side bending were reduced to 58.3% and 63.6% compared with NB, respectively. The other three LSOs showed significantly higher restriction in extension, rotation, and side bending than NB. In flexion and side bending, DC showed significantly higher restriction than NB. CONCLUSIONS: HO showed high restriction in all directions. RS showed higher restriction in extension than NB and less restriction in flexion and side bending than other custom-made LSOs. DC was the only soft LSO showing higher restriction than NB in flexion.

OBJECTIVE: Thin-walled regions (TIWRs) within cerebral aneurysms have a high risk of rupture during surgical manipulation. Previous reports have demonstrated specific changes in the parameters of computational fluid dynamics in TIWRs; however, they have not been fully evaluated. We identified and investigated a novel parameter, wall shear stress vector cycle variation (WSSVV), with user-friendly software that could predict TIWRs. METHODS: Twelve unruptured cerebral aneurysms were analyzed. TIWRs were defined as reddish areas compared with the normal-colored parent artery on intraoperative views. The position and orientation of these clinical images were adjusted to match the WSSVV color maps. TIWRs and thick-walled regions (TKWRs) were marked and compared with the corresponding regions on WSSVV maps. The default images obtained from WSSVV imaging required appropriate maximum color bar value (MCBV) adjustment for predicting TIWRs. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed by changing the MCBV from 300 to 700 at intervals of 100. With the optimal MCBV, the WSSVV values were quantitatively compared. RESULTS: All of the selected 18 TIWRs and 16 TKWRs corresponded to low- and high-value regions of the WSSVV color maps at the adjusted MCBV, respectively. The mean optimal MCBV was 483.3 ± 167.50 (range, 300-700). According to receiver operating characteristic analysis, the best MCBV for predicting TIWRs was 500 (highest sensitivity, 0.89; specificity, 0.94). Under this condition, the quantitative values of the computational fluid dynamics color maps for TIWRs and TKWRs were significantly different (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Low WSSVV values may indicate TIWRs within cerebral aneurysms.
